Orientation dependence and interior of the ferroelastic hysteresis
of a single crystal Cu-Zn-Al alloy

Abstract:
Results of the investigation of the ferroelastic hysteresis in full and partial
tensile-compression deformation cycles on the single-crystal Cu-18wt%Zn-7wt%Al
shape memory alloy in the martensitic state are presented.
Similarity of the mechanical hysteresis at the deformation of the martensite in shape memory alloys
to the ferromagnetic hysteresis at the magnetisation of ferromagnetic materials is shown
experimentally for the first time - for that reason the investigated hysteresis was called "ferroelastic hysteresis".
Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the major and partial hysteresis loops
and their dependence on the crystallographic orientation of the sample and on the temperature are investigated and discussed.
